Sustainability

Ravensburger is committed to its responsibility to act sustainably. In its corporate principles, Ravensburger declares its “responsibility for maintaining a healthy environment” and the “responsible production that conserves resources and the environment”.

Ravensburger manufactures a large majority of its products in its own plants and stands for long-lasting product quality. It conserves resources by using recycled materials and renewable raw materials. More environmentally friendly technical solutions are continuously being tested – while taking product safety and quality into account. The company also acts in a socially sustainable manner and promotes family-friendly working conditions within the company as well as fair working conditions for suppliers and partner companies.
These standards cover – among other issues – the prohibition of child labour, compliance with legal working time regulations, and safety, health and environmental standards. Our partner companies are obliged to comply with these standards. Inspections are performed by independent bodies.

Sustainability at Ravensburger includes:

1. Climate protection due to production in owned factories and minimized transport routes

Unlike most toy and game manufacturers, the Ravensburger Group produces the greatest share of their products in its own plants at its German headquarters and in the Czech Republic – with a large production depth. Opportunities for insourcing are utilized, for example injection molding. The company also operates its own European logistics centers close to its production facilities. As a result, Ravensburger shortens transport routes and reduces its CO2 emissions. Emission-intensive air freight is avoided as much as possible.

2. Conservation of resources due to longlasting products, recycling mat. & renewable energy

Due to their high quality, Ravensburger products are often in use for many years. The company uses high-quality and especially durable cardboard, which has been exclusively produced for Ravensburger. The content quality of the products also ensures that many games are often played by the next generation.

The treatment of raw materials is also sustainable. This has been part of the company's continuous improvement process for years. Ravensburger manufactures its puzzles, games, books and cardboard boxes to the largest part from the raw materials cardboard and paper. These are all sourced from sustainable forestry according to the guidelines of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). For toys, these raw materials consist almost entirely of recycled material sourced in Europe, mostly from producers in Germany, Northern Italy and the Netherlands. Books contain only about a quarter of recycled material to ensure paper quality.
The packaging of most Ravensburger products – the cardboard box – is not disposed of after the purchase. It serves to store the product for years and is sometimes part of the game construction.

The company increasingly relies on renewable energy sources for their energy mix. In recent years, Ravensburger has also conducted a number of energy-saving projects on heating and air-conditioning systems, lighting, machinery and steam generation and belongs to an energy efficiency network.

3. Avoiding waste and pollution

Almost all of the raw materials used by Ravensburger are recyclable. This is particularly due to the high percentage of cardboard and paper used by Ravensburger. Even the injection-molded parts used inside the cardboard box are recyclable. As a manufacturer of toys and games, Ravensburger additionally avoids the use of substances that are hazardous to health and therefore also ecologically harmful, often applying stricter standards than those required by law in their own tests.
Shrink wrap foils around books are not used anymore, other than very few exceptions. Alternative packaging methods for games are currently being tested.

4. Social sustainability - through values, family-friendliness and fair working conditions

The Ravensburger family-owned company stands for continuity and values. It operates internationally, but has been firmly rooted at the Ravensburg location for generations. The company supports local cultural and social projects. It also established a “Ravensburger Verlag charity foundation”, which funds education and development projects relevant to children and families.
Ravensburger makes it easy for its employees to balance family and work. The family-friendly measures range from flexible working hours, part-time models and flexible shifts through to re-entry assistance following parental leave, daycare placement and recreational park vacation childcare.

Even though the Ravensburger Group only has a small share of its toys manufactured in China, it was one of the first German toy and game manufacturers that certified the few suppliers they had in China according to the ICTI audit process (International Council of Toy Industries). Ravensburger is also a member of amfori-BSCI. With their certificates, both organisations are committed to ensure that toys and games are produced in a safe, fair and humane environment. Ravensburger is also cooperating with the “Fair spielt” organization and provides them with a transparent look at their production sites.
