Sustainability - Where we act.

Sustainability has been at the heart of our corporate culture for generations – long before it became today’s much talked-about topic. Since 2019 we have complemented our sustainability approach by developing a climate strategy and defining four action pillars which represent the company`s social and ecological sustainability focus.

Healthy climate

Our operations will be carbon neutral by 2023. Additionally, we further aim to reduce actual emissions along the entire value chain 40% by 2030.

Sustainable resources

Our products are manufactured from high-quality materials to be long-lasting and safe for children. The paper and wood in our products are FSC® certified, supporting responsible forestry.

How we treat each other

Our relations with employees and business partners alike are fair, respectful and reliable. Our suppliers are committed to certified social standards.

Lifelong learning

Our products and contents promote togetherness, social skills like tolerance, fairness and non-discrimination as well as respect and openness towards other cultures.

Healthy climate

We produce over two-thirds of our products in our own facilities in Europe. Product development takes place in offices in Europe and the USA. Those operations* will be carbon neutral by 2023.

To ensure carbon neutral operations we reduce the largest part of our actual emissions. Remaining emissions are offset by well-chosen climate protection projects. E.g. we are collaborating with the NGO “Fairventures Worldwide” and over 100,000 trees in Uganda and Indonesia have already been planted.

Our work doesn`t end here. Since the majority of Ravensburger’s carbon footprint is related to areas outside of our operations, it is our goal to reduce our entire carbon footprint by 40%** by 2030 compared to 2018. E.g. this includes also emissions from delivered materials or logistics services.

We are regularly measuring our carbon footprint and are identifying areas of the company where a reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions is feasible. For example, we run our production facility and the administration building in Ravensburg with renewable energy. Our production facility in the Czech Republic is operated with its own photovoltaic system. (Download Certificate (PDF), Download Project Certificate (PDF))

This impacts our entire company and management as well as our employees are committed to help achieve our targets. To name just a few initiatives already in place, everyone can charge their electric vehicles (and e-bikes) for free and we have increased the share of vegetarian food in our canteen. Additionally, we offer a training program ("CARBONAUTS") to help employees reduce their personal carbon footprint.

* Operational emissions: Direct emissions (Scope 1) and Emissions related to energy sourcing (Scope 2, market-based method). We calculate our Corporate Carbon Footprint according to GHG Protocol standards.
** Scope 1, 2 & 3. Base year 2018. Relative reduction target CO2e/Net Sales.

Sustainable resources

To conserve earth's natural resources, we ensure our products have the longest possible lifecycle and will be enjoyed by many family generations.

The major resource in our production is recycled paper and cardboard sourced mainly in Europe. We use FSC® certified paper, cardboard and wood (Forest Stewardship Council) in order to support an environmentally-sound and socially beneficial management of the world’s forests. For the brands of the Ravensburger Group there are three FSC-certifications in place:

  • Ravensburger Verlag GmbH | FSC License Code C111262

  • BRIO AB | FSC Licence Code C133361

  • Ravensburger North America, Inc. | FSC Licence Code C132944

  • For further information, please find here our FSC policy statement (PDF).

We reduce single-use plastics. We are further increasing the share of recycled material in paper and plastics. Likewise, we are improving the recyclability of our products and packaging and also looking at both ecological and economic alternatives for plastics derived from fossil oil.

Our plastics currently consist mainly of fossil raw materials. For this reason, we are working intensively on more sustainable alternatives. In the GraviTrax Junior product range, Ravensburger mainly uses a mixture of organic plastic and FSC® certified wood fibres. Bio-plastic does not consist of fossil raw materials, but of renewable raw materials, such as vegetable fats. Only recycled raw materials are used. These do not compete with food production.

    How we treat each other

While caring for the environment we also care for our people. Ravensburger, a family business in its fourth generation, has earned a reputation for being respectful, reliable and fair to its employees, offering a large range of benefits to ensure family needs and fulfilment at work go hand-in-hand. This includes family-friendly flexible working hours, various part-time models, flexible shiftwork, re-entry assistance after parental leave, childcare services and school holiday programs for children. As a multinational company we welcome everyone and offer equal opportunities.

Beyond our own employees, we also ensure social standards are applied at all steps of our global value chain. Suppliers are carefully selected. Non-EU suppliers must be certified by the International Council of Toy Industries (ICTI) or audited by amfori-BSCI.

In the wider community, our company is committed to children, families and educational institutions in many ways. On the one hand, we fund a donation program. In 2020, Ravensburger donated over 1 million € to charitable projects. Additionally, the Ravensburger Verlag Foundation has been supporting initiatives and projects that benefit children, families and education for more than 20 years.

    Lifelong learning

Sustainability starts in our mind. Ravensburger products have always promoted active togetherness, social skills like tolerance and non-discrimination, respect towards other cultures, and openness to new ideas. This mindset is vital for life in our society.

The content of some of our products aims to raise awareness about sustainability-related topics and foster sustainable behavior among children and families. We also develop products that convey also environmental awareness in a playful and entertaining way. Examples are our new game series “EcoCreate”, which combines creativity with upcycling or the children’s book “Wieso? Weshalb? Warum? ProfiWissen: Umweltschutz”
